Embracing a Season of Change: an Update on Jaimie's Transition Plan

Dear Members of First Congregational Church and the Battle Creek community,

I am writing to share an important update regarding my role as Executive Director at First Congregational Church and the managed transition plan that has been developed in the last two weeks. As you may already know, on September 3rd, I announced in worship, through email, and on social media my resignation from this position that has been more than just a job—it's been a calling and a privilege. Since that announcement, I have been working diligently in my part-time capacity at FCCBC, focusing on developing a comprehensive plan for a managed transition, which will continue throughout the rest of the year.

One of the key aspects of this transition plan is the gradual reduction of my weekly hours at First Congregational Church. This phased approach will continue until I either secure employment elsewhere or until my successor is found—whichever comes first. Even after I have transitioned completely out of my role, I am willing to offer information requested by FCCBC staff and Church Council should they need it to complete the important projects they are working on. The goal here is to ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities and a seamless transition for all involved.

Central to this process is a master planning document that I've created. This document serves as a living guide, accessible to our Church Council, Pastor Nate and my future replacement, to document and navigate this period of change. It addresses various facets of my ministry duties, including building management and administration, human resources and head of staff matters, financial management, communication with our community partners, office administration, Church Council responsibilities, and the pivotal building transformation project, among others. Some of my job duties will be permanently transitioned to other staff and Church Council members, while others will be temporarily reassigned until my replacement is hired. A dedicated Search Committee will be appointed to oversee the hiring process of my successor. The Church Council will receive regular updates on my progress and play a vital role in offering discernment and guidance throughout this transition.

In addition to the plan itself, I am working with Nate and the Parish Relations team to create a covenant that will shape my ongoing relationship with First Congregational Church, its leadership, and its members after my formal transition. This covenant will be thoughtfully communicated to the Congregation, and its purpose is to define roles, boundaries, and accountability mechanisms for all parties involved. Even after my transition is complete, Parish Relations will remain a pillar of support, guidance, and accountability for my relationship with FCCBC. We look forward to celebrating this covenant with a ritual affirmation in worship on my final Sunday once the transition period concludes.

Importantly, I want to highlight that, while my role will change, my commitment to First Congregational Church remains steadfast. In fact, I hope to continue contributing to our congregation in various capacities, such as preaching (once my graduate studies conclude at the end of December 2023), leading small groups, and coordinating community outreach opportunities. However, my role will evolve from decision-making leadership to supporting others in leading the overall mission and vision of our faith community.

My utmost desire throughout this transition is to see the FCCBC building transformation project and staffing changes flourish. The essence of this managed transition is to provide an intentional, transparent, and considerate framework that supports everyone involved during this period of change. As we navigate these waters together, I ask for your continued prayers, support, and understanding.

The strength of our community lies in our collective ability to adapt and grow in the face of change. First Congregational Church has a rich history of resilience, and I have every confidence that we will rise to the occasion once again. We are, after all, a congregation called to embody God’s love, including during the discomfort of evolution and transformation.

In closing, I am immensely grateful for the privilege of serving as Executive Director and look forward to our shared journey in this new chapter. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or simply want to connect.

Warmly,

Jaimie Fales

Transitioning Executive Director
