Changes to the Sanctuary Organ
In the fall of 2020, the Church Council was provided with an update regarding the organ in our Sanctuary. This update included a new quote from an organ builder/repair team with a plan to allow the organ to continue to be playable while addressing safety concerns.
Over time, several of the largest pipes in the organ facade have been showing signs of deterioration. These pipes are quite heavy and over time, the openings located at the bottom of the pipes that allow for sound to pass through (creating some of the lower tones) have begun to close. Furthermore, the deterioration of the metal and potential collapse of these pipes present a safety concern.
Therefore, Council, the Property Committee and church staff consulted with a variety of organ builders, the original builder of our Sanctuary organ and Al Bolitho to find possible solutions. After reviewing proposals and quotes over several years, the most cost effective solution that presented itself is the removal of six large pipes from the organ facade. While this will limit some of the playability, it is a solution that will address safety concerns while also allowing the organ to be used for worship and choral accompaniment. Fabric panels have been secured to hang in the facade and we are grateful to Linda Wetherbee for her donation of time, skills and materials for these panels.
In mid April, this work was completed on the organ. The organ pipes were taken to be recycled and we are hopeful that these funds will help to cover the cost of these repairs. Depending on funding options in the future, these pipes could be replaced. Questions about this project can be directed to the Property Committee (Randy Case and Lloyd Terry) or Jaimie at the Church Office.
